Cathedral of the Annunciation

The Annunciation Cathedral in the Kazan Kremlin is a monument of Russian culture from the 14th to 19th centuries. Together with the neighboring Kul Sharif Mosque , it is a symbol of the peaceful coexistence of the Muslim and Orthodox population of Tatarstan .

The “ordinary” wooden church was built on October 4th, 1552 by Ivan IV in honor of the Annunciation . In the years 1555 to 1562 the cathedral was built from white stone with five cross domes, three aspids and six supporting pillars. The architecture of the cathedral combines elements of the Pskov , Moscow and Vladimir building schools. A five-story bell tower was built in the 17th century. In the 18th century, the cathedral's domes, which were in the shape of a helmet, were replaced by onion domes. In 1841 the cathedral was enlarged according to the project of FI Petond, two aspids and a refectory were added. In 1860 the famous icon painter NL Safonow painted walls and ceilings with oil paints.

Until 1918, the Cathedral of the Annunciation was the main Orthodox cathedral for the Kazan eparchy . Fragments of frescoes from the 17th century have been preserved in the interior.

In the 1930s, the bell tower, the gallery and the main stairs were dismantled, and many treasures were stolen. During the years of Soviet rule, the archives were located in the cathedral building for a long time.

In 1996 the building was handed over to the administration of the museum area of the "Kazan Kremlin".

The archpriests and archbishops who died in Kazan were buried here. On July 16, 1897, John of Kronstadt (one of the most venerated saints today) held the service here. Peter I , Catherine II and all the later tsars took part in services in the Cathedral of the Annunciation .
