The Roman Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary is a Gothic hall church in Bad Birnbach in the Lower Bavarian district of Rottal-Inn . It belongs to the Parish Association of Bad Birnbach in the parish church deanery of the Diocese of Passau .

History and architecture

The church was built in the late 15th century and received its classicist tower in the years 1828–1831. It is one of the finest late Gothic buildings in the region. The exterior of the church is marked by simplifications that were made during renovations. The dominant classicist tower, which is structured by corner pilasters and cornices, is built onto the head of the choir. A low four-sided hood over the parapet with flat gables serves as a conclusion . The surprisingly spacious interior consists of a nave with four bays and the slightly higher, slightly retracted choir with two bays and five-eighth end . Both parts of the room are closed off by ribbed vaults. In the nave, the flat shield arches are profiled with round bars and provided with semicircular services, while the corresponding sections of the choir are chamfered. The vault ribs form large diamond stars, which are separated from each other by belt ribs. A fully developed star shape dominates the end of the choir. The color scheme of the room was renewed in 1970. The outlines are painted with an ocher-yellow block imitation, the service templates are marbled in red. The crossings of the ribs are highlighted in different colors and equipped with tendril tufts.

The Lady Chapel on the south side of the nave consists of two yokes of different widths, which are opened to the ship with chamfered pointed arches. The final net rib vaults, at least in the west yoke, date from the time the church was built. The tower was originally built over the eastern yoke of the chapel.

The Schmid Chapel on the north side of the nave was built in 1734 through a wall breakthrough in the second yoke, in which the former buttresses were incorporated into the surrounding walls. The vaulted annex probably served as a burial chapel for the von Schmid family. Inside, it is stuccoed, forming bands and latticework, tendrils and lambrequins . Three-dimensionally modeled angel busts and ornamental pendants are attached to the pilasters . The marriage coat of arms of those from Schmid-Echingen zu Balzheim is modeled above the arch to the ship. The altar in the semicircular east end is stucco fixed to the wall. The relics of the catacomb saint Chrysanthus, which were brought here in 1695, are displayed in a glass shrine .

Furnishing

The high altar from 1887 was designed by Sebastian Höfele and provided with sculptures. The Coronation of the Virgin Mary, depicted in relief in the central shrine, bears the artist's signature. The epitaph of Anton von Sigershofen zu Prapach and Aicha († 1548) and his wife Susanna, which comes from the former Sebastian chapel, is placed in the Schmid Chapel. It shows the couple kneeling in front of the crucifix in a relief.
