Maria, Hilfe der Christians is a Catholic church in Goldscheuer , a district of the Kehl community in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg . It was redesigned in 2011 by graffiti artist Stefan Strumbel .

Emergence

The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1961. The brick-built church building with a free-standing bell tower was inaugurated in 1963. Previously there was only a so-called emergency church in Goldscheuer.

Redesign in 2011

The dilapidated church should initially be closed due to a lack of church attendants and the great need for renovation. Donations finally saved the church and street artist Stefan Strumbel from neighboring Offenburg developed the ideas for the redesign. After the initial skepticism about modern art in the Catholic village church, the community fully supported him.

The church was reopened on July 1st, 2011. On a gallery above the entrance there is an eight-meter-tall Madonna in traditional Hanau costume with the baby Jesus. It was painted with spray cans. After the redesign, the choir wall presents itself with a gilded group of crosses, which are optically emphasized by pink rays and a prominent Gothic pointed arch with LED lighting. Next to the entrance there are two pop-art-style comic speech bubbles that candles can be placed in.

The pastor of Kehl, Thomas Braunstein, described Strumbel's free staging of the new symbols as a "gift from heaven".
