Maria-Hilf-Church in Krumbach

The Maria-Hilf-Kirche , officially St. Maria, Helferin der Christians , is a Catholic parish church in Hürben , the eastern part of Krumbach (Swabia) . It was built between 1966 and 1968 and is the largest church in southern Germany built after the Second World War. The fact that such a large church was built has to do with the fact that the population of Krumbach roughly doubled after the war due to the influx of people who had been displaced from their homeland and grew even further in the years that followed. The building was planned by the Ulm architects Manfred Wacker and Erich Niederbacher.

description

Outside

Seen from the outside, the church building stands out due to its irregular shape. The 42 m high, free-standing bell tower, together with the ensemble formed from the St. Michaels Church and the Lichtenstein Castle in the center of the town, characterizes the townscape of Krumbach. The tower cross dominates the tall, rather narrow tower.

inner space

The interior of the Maria-Hilf-Kirche is interesting because of the play of the different lighting conditions. The northern part of the church under the large gallery, which you come into when you enter the church, is relatively dark. In this area there is a large figure of Mary.

The sanctuary, on the other hand, is bright due to the incidence of light from above and from the western side. The sanctuary is characterized by the tabernacle and above all the fresco on the south wall. In front of it stands a human-sized cross without the body of Christ. The mural depicts the Most Holy Trinity in connection with the cross . The Holy Spirit , symbolized by a dove, hovers over everything. The eye of God , in the middle of the picture, looks at the cross and into the church.

The narrow but very high tabernacle on the south wall of the building points towards the sky, similar to the rising forms of Gothic churches. To the right of the tabernacle, on a pedestal the size of a table, stands a Mother of God and Child, the patroness of the church. The Christmas crib is set up on this pedestal at Christmas time. The ambo and the altar are relatively large according to the size of the church, but kept simple.

On the northwest corner of the church is the church's baptistery.

History of the place where the church stands today

From 1939 to 1945, a Reich labor service camp for the “female labor service” was located on the site on which the Maria-Hilf-Kirche, the parish hall and the kindergarten stand today . After the Second World War, until the construction of the church began, the camp was used as a reception and transit station for displaced persons.
