The Maria Ward Realschule Augsburg is a mixed Realschule in downtown Augsburg . The school is sponsored by the Catholic Church (Schulwerk der Diocese Augsburg).
history
In 1662 six noble nuns from England, including Mary Poyntz, a companion of Maria Ward , came to Augsburg . They founded the Herz Jesu monastery , a school for the poor and a secondary school for girls, also known as the English Institute, in Frauentorstrasse near Augsburg Cathedral . After a visit by Emperor Leopold I and his court in 1690, the English ladies were granted citizenship, thanks to which the school escaped secularization .
During the Third Reich , more precisely between the years 1941 and 1945, teaching by the nuns was forbidden. In 1944 the school building was almost completely destroyed in the air raids on Augsburg . When the sisters were allowed to run the school again in 1948, the English Institute was divided into a grammar school and a secondary school (then middle school). In the following years, the number of female pupils increased sharply, because on the one hand the time at secondary school was extended twice and because more and more female pupils were accepted.
On January 1, 1992, the diocese of Augsburg took over the sponsorship of the school because the previous sponsor, the Maria Ward Institute, had financial problems.
At the beginning of the 2010/2011 school year, Rosa Müller took over the school management and opened the school to boys.
Elective subject groups
Four different groups of elective subjects are currently offered. Before moving on to the 7th grade, the pupils have to decide on a branch.
- Branch I: mathematical-scientific-technical area (since the school year 2012/2013)
- Branch II: economic area
- Branch III a: French as a second foreign language
- Branch III b: domestic economic area
