Life

Maria Amelie or Madina Salamowa and their parents came to Finland from North Ossetia in 2000 and to Norway in 2002. The family declared that they were persecuted and that they feared for their lives in the Caucasus. The family's application for asylum was not granted, so she lives in Norway without legal residence status and without tolerance . While the asylum application was being processed, Maria Amelie went to secondary school and finally studied at the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway in Trondheim without a residence permit . She earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology and a master's degree in technology and science with a thesis for the Norwegian Statoil .

In 2010 she published her book Ulovlig norsk (Illegal Norwegian) at Pax Forlag , in which she described her life without papers in Norway. In December of the same year it was approved by the weekly magazine Ny Tid as Årets Nordmann selected ( "Norwegian of the Year").

On January 12, 2011, Maria Amelie was arrested in Lillehammer after giving a lecture. She was in detention arrested and deported shortly thereafter to Russia. After massive public protests against this deportation, however, the government of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg announced a special arrangement that would allow Maria Amelie to return to Norway.
