Maria Atanasova

Marija Georgiewa Atanasova (also written Maria Georgieva Atanasova , Bulgarian Мария Георгиева Атана̀сова , born December 26, 1926 in Kalekowez , Bulgaria , † April 11, 2000 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian MP and pilot . She was the first female captain for heavy aircraft types.

Life

Born in Kalekowets on December 25, 1926. In 1950 she completed her training in the first group for female pilots at the military flight school in Dolna Mitropolija . Until 1952 she worked as a flight instructor in this flight school, then she completed her training as a fighter pilot. Between 1953 and 1974 she was the captain of the planes Lissunow Li-2 , Ilyushin Il-14 , Ilyushin Il-18 and Tupolev Tu-134 for Balkan Bulgarian Airlines . She had a total of 13,999 flight hours. In 1965, she became the first woman to land an airliner at London Heathrow Airport . From 1966 to 1971 she was a member of the 5th Narodno Sabranie , the Bulgarian National Assembly.
