from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maria Benvinda Delfina Levy , mostly just Maria Benvinda Levy , is a Mozambican politician ( FRELIMO ) and a judge at the Mozambique Supreme Court .

Professional background

Maria Benvinda Levy began her civil service at the city court of the Mozambican capital Maputo ( Tribunal Judicial da Cidade de Maputo ), where she worked as a judge until 2006. In 2006, she switched to the state training center for judges and prosecutors in Mozambique ( Centro de Formação Jurídica e Judiciária ) , which was founded in 2000 . She was the head of the training center.

As part of a cabinet reshuffle in March 2008, President Armando Guebuza appointed Benvinda Levy as the country's new Justice Minister. It followed Esperança Machavela . She headed the Justice Department until the end of the second Guebuza cabinet in March 2015. As part of her office, one of her goals was to improve the situation of prison inmates in Mozambique, which the Mozambican Human Rights League and Amnesty International described as "dramatic" . It achieved a significant improvement in the situation, which was also recognized by civil society. According to Levy's own statement, priority for Levy during her term of office was “illegal immigration” to Mozambique and the “trickery” of Mozambican citizenship by foreigners.

In 2012, three years before the end of her term of office, President Armando Guebuza appointed her as the new judge at the Mozambique Supreme Court . However, she only took office after the end of the legislative period. It was introduced in spring 2015. The new President Filipe Nyusi also appointed them to the State Council , a purely advisory body of the President.

In the context of the political and military crisis between the ruling party FRELIMO and the opposition party RENAMO , she was appointed in spring 2016 as a member of the new joint commission to negotiate a new peace treaty between the conflicting parties.
