Maria Rast am Stein (or shortened Maria Rast, Czech. "Panna Marie odpočívající na denni") is a Marian pilgrimage site near Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth) in Okres Český Krumlov (Bohemian-Krumlov district), which can be reached via a hiking trail along the Way of the Cross from Hohenfurth reached out. To the southwest of Hohenfurth Abbey on the northern slope of Martínkovský vrch, 846 m, there is the pilgrimage chapel “Our Lady of the Snow” or Maria Rast, a picture gallery and the chapel of the Holy Sepulcher. Pilgrimages take place at the Feasts of the Virgin Mary (July 2nd), Assumption of Mary (August 15) and the Birth of Mary (September 8).

History of the pilgrimage site

There is a granite block on site, on which, according to legend, Mary rested with the baby Jesus. Therefore, in 1844, a picture of the Virgin Mary was hung there in the snow . In 1887, shepherds built a small hut over the stone and decorated it with images of saints. The abbot of Hohenfurth Monastery Leopold Wackarž (1810–1901) decided to build a pilgrimage chapel here during a visit. The chapel was built in neo-Romanesque style and consecrated on August 15, 1888 by Abbot Leopold Wackarž, about 2000 pilgrims took part in this mass. In 1890 a larger chapel was built next to the old chapel. In this there is a life-size statue of “Our Lady of the Snow” and the figure of grace of the Madonna and Child. The pilgrimage site was built out of awe of the biblical story, according to which Mary and Joseph stopped several times with the baby Jesus on the flight to Egypt . The old chapel is used as a picture gallery. In 1898, the 14 Stations of the Cross and the Holy Sepulcher were built on a rock below the pilgrimage chapel. Below the rock there used to be an inn (the ruins are still visible), where, among other things, monastery beer was served.
