The church Maria Schutz and St. Andreas in Munich 's Untergiesing district is the cathedral of the Apostolic Exarchy for Catholic Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite in Germany and Scandinavia .

history

The church was built according to the plans of the architect Erwin Schleich . It was consecrated on October 17, 1976.

On November 22, 2008, a memorial stone for the victims of the Holodomor was unveiled in front of the cathedral .

The patronage refers to the legend of the apparition of Mary of Andrei Jurodiwi , the feast day is the protection of the Virgin and Intercession ( Church Slavonic Покровъ Pokrova , October 1st / 14th, greg./jul.).

The outer

The church is a rectangular building with a base area of ​​about 18 m wide and 24 m long. The wide facade is divided in the middle by the entrance gate and a glass window above it. In addition, there are round bronze reliefs of the founders of Christianity in Ukraine , to the left of the entrance of St. Vladimir ( Ukrainian Volodymyr ), to the right of St. Olga .

The back of the church is formed by three semicircular apses of equal size, which symbolize the Trinity . In the middle of the flat roof rises a dome, crowned by a cross.

The inner

From the entrance on the west side you get to the main room through an anteroom. The chancel is slightly raised compared to the main room and separated from it by the iconostasis .
