Maria Wasna

Maria Wasna (born March 10, 1930 in Tilsit in East Prussia ; † November 2, 2019 ) was a German psychologist . She was the first female rector at a German university and headed the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster from 1990 to 1994.

Life

Maria Wasna was initially a youth welfare worker. From 1960 to 1966 she studied psychology, sociology, philosophy and education at the Universities of Münster and Bochum. In 1968 she received her doctorate with the pedagogical-psychological dissertation "The development of achievement motivation - objectives of normal and debilitating children in a tower building task". Later, she submitted other papers, particularly on the subject of motivation. In 1971 she completed her habilitation at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe.

Wasna was initially a private lecturer at the Ruhr University of Education, Essen department . In 1972 she became a professor of psychology at the comprehensive university in Essen . In 1974 she was offered a full professorship at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe in Münster, where she became Vice-Rector for Teaching and Chair of the University Commission for Research, Teaching and Studies in 1975. With the incorporation of the PH Westfalen-Lippe into the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU), she became a professor at the Psychological Institute of the WWU in 1980. In 1986 she became vice-rector at the WWU and finally in 1990 first rector of a German university. Her main focus was on the structural development of the university, the opening of the university to the city of Münster and the Münsterland region, as well as relations with the Netherlands and above all with the Baltic universities and states.

From 1991 Wasna developed partnerships with the Universities of Riga, Vilnius and Tartu. With the establishment of the Friends of the Baltic States (1993 to 2008), she also focused on economic relations between the Münsterland and the Baltic States. She was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Latvia in Riga (1994) and the University of Vilnius in Lithuania (1999); she became an honorary member of the University of Tartu in Estonia (1995). In 2004 he was honored with the Order of Vytautas the Great (Knight's Cross), the state order of the Republic of Lithuania . In 1997, Maria Wasna was awarded the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Herzog.
