Maria de Bahia is the title of a French hit song by Paul Misraki and André Hœnez from 1948. The version by Ray Ventura developed into a worldwide hit .

The song is about the samba dancer Maria, from Bahia . In the French refrain, the lines Ay ay ay, Maria are repeated over and over again. The lines are followed by the individual stanzas, such as Elle avait le teint comme tu satin . It is similar in the German text. In the version by Danielle Mac and Rene Carol , sentences are sung like Everyone who sees you dancing only dreams of Maria . The version also consists of an alternating song between Maria and René .

After Paul Misraki and André Hœnez wrote the song, it was recorded by Ray Ventura in 1948. The song became a worldwide success. Kurt Feltz , who was looking for new, unknown singers, discovered Rene Carol in 1949. The Polydor made him a contract. On April 14, 1949, Carol recorded his first solo record. Kurt Feltz rewrote the French text. He was accompanied in the song by vocal singer Danielle Mac and Ernst Fischer with his soloists. The German version also became a success.

Verpoorten used the melody in advertising for his eggnog from the early 1960s .
