Mariam Jack-Denton

Mariam Jack-Denton (born December 29, 1955 in Bathurst ) is a Gambian lawyer and politician and from April 2017 spokeswoman for the country's national assembly .

Life

Jack-Denton attended Gambia High School (today: Gambia Senior Secondary School ) and then studied law at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife (Nigeria). She was State Counsel from 1979 to 1987 before becoming Principal State Counsel in 1988 .

She is a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP). As an opposition politician, she was exposed to pressure from the Yahya Jammeh government . She was arrested on April 6, 2006, and detained without charge for several weeks without exposure to the outside world. She was released on July 24, 2006.

After the 2017 general election , she was elected by President Adama Barrow as one of five additional elected members of Parliament. His proposal to appoint her as parliamentary speaker was unanimously approved by parliament in the first constituent session.

Jack-Denton is the daughter of Sir Alieu Sulayman Jack , who was Speaker of Parliament in the First Republic . Jack-Denton is widowed and married to chief accountant Abou Denton and has one son. She was the first woman to practice law in the Gambia.
