Marianne Braig

Marianne Braig (* 1953 ) is a German political scientist and university professor at the Latin America Institute (LAI) at the Free University of Berlin .

Career

Braig studied economics and sociology at the Free University of Berlin from 1972 to 1977 . After graduating from 1977 to 1978 she studied political science, anthropology and history at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México . From 1978 to 1983 she worked as a research assistant in the Sociology Department at the Free University of Berlin. From 1983 to 1984 she did research as a Junior Fellow at El Colegio de México and at Colegio de Jalisco in Mexico . From 1984 to 1988 she carried out research with the support of the DFG as a research assistant in the project “Labor Market and Gender in Mexico and Nigeria” at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin. From 1988 to 1997 she taught as a university lecturer at the Latin America Institute of the Free University of Berlin. In 1989 she received her doctorate in sociology with summa cum laude at the Free University of Berlin.

In 1997 she moved to the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , where she taught as a university lecturer in political science at the Institute for Comparative Political Science and International Relations in the Faculty of Social Sciences until 2002. In 1999 she qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Berlin and was followed in 2002 a call to a C4 professor of political science at the Free University of Berlin with a focus on policy in Latin America. In 2009 and 2013 to 2014 she taught as a visiting professor at El Colegio de México.

Braig's research focuses on the investigation of political culture, the state and statehood, as well as transregional and global interrelationships and inequalities in different countries in Latin America.

Braig has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2008 and a member of the Excellence Council of the Free University of Berlin since 2009.
