Life

After completing a second degree in social sciences at the universities of Hamburg, Mainz and Bochum, she received her doctorate in Hamburg in 1976 on the subject of motivation and political action . From 1987 to 2006 she was a professor of educational science at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences . She is married to the theologian and sociologist Reimer Gronemeyer .

Positions

Gronemeyer is considered a thought leader in the growth-critical debate. In her book "The Power of Needs", published for the first time in 1988, Gronemeyer criticized the affluent society and the needs of modern humans. Gronemeyer opens her book with the following quote from Jean Baudrillard : “There is a story: once there was a man who lived in poverty. After many adventures and a long journey through economic science, he met the affluent society. They married and they had many needs. ”The artificial creation of needs that are necessary for the preservation of capitalism is contrasted with the immediate needs of life. In her works, Gronemeyer encourages people to withdraw from consumer society and to oppose the non-sustainable growth model.

Honors

In 2011 she received the Salzburg State Prize for Future Research , and in 2013 the Dr. Margrit Egnér Foundation .
