Marianne Merchez (born November 25, 1960 in Uccle , Belgium ) was a trainee astronaut at the European Space Agency between May 15, 1992 and 1995 .
She is married to the Italian Maurizio Cheli , who was also a member of the European Astronaut Corps .
Marianne Merchez studied medicine and space medicine and trained as a airline pilot ( Boeing 737 ). She was the first woman selected by ESA, but after marrying Maurizio Cheli, she left the corps without being assigned a mission.
She currently lives in Turin , Italy and runs the Zenix Consulting firm with her husband .
