Mariannenbahn

The Mariannenbahn was a horse-drawn railway operated from 1854 to the 1860s , which was used to transport hard coal between Höntrop , now part of the Wattenscheid district in Bochum , and Steele , now part of Essen .

history

Trades of the United Maria Anna Steinbank colliery, also known as the Marianne colliery , originally envisaged a railway connection to the Cologne-Mindener railway in Gelsenkirchen . After this project failed, they had the 6.2 kilometer long Mariannenbahn built as a horse-drawn tram from Höntop via Eiberg and Horst to Steele, as a connection to the Prinz Wilhelm Railway had been available there since 1847 . It went into operation in 1854. Since the connection was made in standard gauge , the tracks of the Mariannenbahn to the Ruhr Valley were also built in standard gauge on sandstone sleepers in order to avoid further reloading after loading the wagons at the colliery.

A steep ramp from Höntrop into the Ruhr valley led to several rail accidents. When the United Maria Anna Steinbank colliery was connected to the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn in Höntrop after 1860 , the Mariannenbahn was shut down.

Todays situation

There are no more recognizable relics of the former railway line.

In Essen-Horst there was a street called Mariannenbahn in memory of this horse-drawn tram until 1974, which at the time had to give way to the construction of the Hörsterfeld high-rise estate. Since 2013, a street called Mariannenbahn has been reminding of this in a new development in Essen-Horst close to the original route.
