Marie-Andrée Bertrand

Marie-Andrée Bertrand , OQ (born June 21, 1925 in Montreal ; † March 6, 2011 ibid) was a French-Canadian criminologist , feminist and anti-prohibitionist activist.

biography

Bertrand comes from an upper-class family of Franco-Canadian nationalists. She began her professional career “as a social worker for delinquent women, mostly prostitutes”. Graduated from the University of Montreal with a Masters in Criminology in 1963 . She then studied at the University of California at Berkeley , where she received a Ph.D. also in criminology. From 1967 to 1997 she was Professor of Criminology at the École de Criminologie at the University of Montreal. Even after her retirement , she continued to work in research and teaching until her death, including at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Oñati .

Scientific work

From a scientific point of view, Bertrand has dealt intensively with three topics: drug policy , the treatment of women by the criminal justice system and generally with critical, feminist theory in the field of criminology and legal sociology . One of her main works is an international comparative study of women's crime (1979, 2003). Furthermore, a comparative study of women's prisons, with Germany being one of the eight countries examined (1998).

activities

Especially in the area of ​​drug policy, Bertrand went far beyond a mere academic preoccupation with its subject. From a young age, she was Vice-President of the Le Dain Commission, a commission of inquiry set up by the Canadian Ministry of Health in 1969, which dealt with the use of non-medical drugs and advocated the legalization of marijuana . Later she joined the International League of Anti-Prohibitionists founded by Marco Pannella , of which she was president for several years. One of her concerns was the abolition of prisons, a goal she described as “a necessary utopia”.
