Marie-Christine Marghem (born May 22, 1963 in Tournai ) is a Belgian lawyer and politician from the Mouvement Réformateur (MR). She has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2003 . She is the acting federal minister for energy, environment and sustainable development in the Wilmès government .

Life

She completed her law studies at the University of Liège (ULg) and began her professional career as a lawyer in 1987.

She made her entry into politics in 1994 as a councilor in Tournai, where she initially ran for the Christian Social Parti Social-Chrétien (PSC). She left the PSC after the then party president Gérard Deprez (MR) called on him to found the splinter party Mouvement des Citoyens pour le Changement (MCC) in 1998 , which is now part of the Mouvement Réformateur.

In 2003, Marghem was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as MR candidate, where in 2011 she took over the chairmanship of the special committee dealing with the investigation into the Dexia affair.

When, after the federal elections on May 25, 2014, MR became the only French-speaking party to join the government under Prime Minister Charles Michel (MR), Marghem became Minister for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (French: Ministre de l'Énergie, de l'Environnement et du Développement durable ). In 2015, the opposition accused it of hiding negative reports in relation to the extension of the service life of the Doel nuclear power plant .

At the local level, Marghem was a member of the municipal council from 2000 to 2006 and from 2012 until her appointment as minister, most recently as first alderwoman of Tournai.
