Jacqueline Galant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacqueline Galant (born March 18, 1974 in Mons ) is a Belgian politician of the Mouvement Réformateur (MR). She had been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2003 and Federal Minister for Mobility in the Michel government from 2014 until her resignation in April 2016 . She has been mayor of Jurbise at the local level since 2001 .

Life

Jacqueline Galant was introduced to politics by her father Jacques Galant ( PSC ), long-time mayor of Jurbise. After completing her studies in administrative and political science at the FUCaM in Mons, she first became politically active in the Christian Social Party, to which her father also belonged.

However, in 1999 she decided to leave the PSC and join the PRL-FDF (now MR). There she first became an advisor in the cabinet of the then Foreign Minister Louis Michel (MR), who promoted her further political career.

In 2000, she and her father stood for election on the mayor's list in Jurbise. In the local elections she was able to win second place and signed an agreement with her father, according to which he left her the office of mayor and in return was given the chairmanship of the public welfare center (ÖSHZ). However, the municipal elections were canceled by the State Council and in the new election in 2001 Jacqueline Galant was able to secure a majority of the votes and thus became mayor.

At the federal level, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2003 and was able to defend this mandate in the subsequent elections. When, after the federal elections on May 25, 2014, MR became the only French-speaking party to join the government under Prime Minister Charles Michel (MR), Jacqueline Galant took over the office of Mobility Minister, overseeing Belgocontrol and the Belgian Railway Company ( NMBS / SNCB ) .

After the terrorist attacks in Brussels in March 2016, it became known that the European Commission had already pointed out security gaps in the area of Brussels-Zaventem Airport in 2011 and 2015 . When the head of administration announced in the media that Galant was aware of these reports and yet cut funding for security, Prime Minister Michel replied during questioning in the Chamber that Galant was not aware of these reports. A little later, however, various documents were leaked to the press that proved the opposite. On April 15, 2016, Jacqueline Galant resigned from her position following a request from the Prime Minister.
