The Marie-Jonas Square is a public space in the district of Eppendorf the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . The area is bounded by Eppendorfer Landstrasse and Kümmellstrasse .

There are commercial properties around the square .

Until well into the 21st century, the area served customers of the Karstadt department store, which was closed in 2007, as a parking space for their cars. After that, it became a multifaceted urban area. The square developed from the park area to the so-called new center of Eppendorf.

Stumbling block for Marie Jonas

The area was named in 2009 after the doctor Marie-Anna Jonas . Marie Jonas came from a Jewish family. Together with her husband and daughter, she lived near the square, in Woldsenweg. On July 19, 1942, Marie Jonas was deported to Theresienstadt . From there she went to Auschwitz , where she was murdered in 1944.

Various types of events take place on Marie-Jonas-Platz. The area serves as a place for a weekly market . During the annual Eppendorfer Landstrasse Festival, the square is used as a fairground . The Eppendorfer Christmas Market is also held on Marie-Jonas-Platz.
