In 1957 she became a youth lawyer for the city of Bern, making her the first full-time youth lawyer in Switzerland. During her studies, she began to be interested in women's issues and politics. In 1942 she joined the women's suffrage association and became president of the action committee for women's participation in the community. Three years later she joins the Social Democratic Party (SP) and from 1966 to 1974 also presides over its women's group, SP Women. For 15 years, from 1949 to 1966, she also served as President of the Legal Commission of the Federation of Swiss Women's Organizations (BSF). Boehlen was also a member of the Swiss UNESCO Commission from 1957 to 1968.
In 1971, the year that women's suffrage and the right to vote were adopted , Boehlen took early retirement in order to dedicate himself to politics. She became active at parliamentary level, first as Bern city councilor from 1972 to 1976, then as Bern councilor from 1974 to 1986. In 1985, at the age of 74, Boehlen received the Ida Somazzi Prize for her commitment to life for women . In her acceptance speech, she said that her commitment to equal rights for women has not always made herself popular, and that she has suffered more defeats than successes, but has contributed to a modest degree to major social change.
