Marie Elisabeth Wrede

Marie Elisabeth Wrede (* 1898 in Salzburghofen , † 1981 in Boulogne ) was an Austrian painter.

She was married to Paul Arnold Hallgarten (* December 7, 1902 in Frankfurt am Main; † 1930 Salzburg), the son of Fritz Hallgarten and Yella Bonn, a cousin of Moritz Julius Bonn , who in turn was a cousin of the art historian Aby Warburg .

Wrede studied with Fernand Léger in Paris. She associated with Paul Valéry , Robert and Sonia Delaunay or Picasso , whom she drew.

Works in museums and collections

  • Wrede was friends with Paul Valéry , whose portrait she captured in a representative drypoint.
  • The Musée national d'art moderne in the Center Pompidou in Paris houses works by her.
  • She portrayed Reinhard Demoll , the rector of Munich University , in 1959/1960. There was a connection to the university through her husband's uncle, the lawyer and German studies specialist Robert Hallgarten (1870–1924).
