Marie Kondō ( Japanese 近藤 麻 理 恵 , Kondō Marie ; born October 9, 1984 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese consultant and bestselling author whose three books have been translated into 27 languages ​​and sold 7 million times worldwide. In English, her last name even became the verb to kondo , which means to clean up a closet .

Career

Kondō works as a regulatory advisor. She gives courses and seminars in which she teaches throwing away and tidying up and presents these as a starting point for an inner order. In 2011 she published the book Jinsei ga Tokimeku Katazuke no Mahō , in which she introduces her methods to create and maintain order. The book sold more than 1.3 million copies in Japan and was the second highest-selling book in Japan in the first half of 2012. In 2012 she published a follow-up volume. Based on both books, the Japanese television station NTV is producing a television series of the same name.

At Rowohlt Verlag , works by Marie Kondō have been published in German since March 2013 . Both books were also published in Chinese in Taiwan . In 2019, the series Tidying up with Marie Kondo from the streaming provider Netflix started . The series led to an increased reception of Kondo in the media.

In the USA, Marie Kondo also offers special face-to-face seminars with which you can be trained as a Certified KonMari Consultant as part of a 7-stage qualification procedure (including online exams) . There are already certified consultants in freelance work in many countries around the world .

In her book she describes her clean-up method as the "Konmari method", which includes the following principles:

  1. Tidy everything up at once, in a short time and perfectly
  2. All things to clean up are collected in a heap
  3. Decide what to keep based on the question: does it make me happy when I pick up this item?
  4. Every item that you keep is assigned its place
  5. All things have to be properly stowed there

Kondo is married and has two daughters. She lives in Los Angeles .
