Marigny de Grilleau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henri-Bernard Marigny de Grilleau (born August 1, 1855 in Pau , † February 25, 1942 in Beausoleil ) was a French mathematician , professional gambler and alleged expert at the Monte Carlo casino , who was to find out in the 1920s with the support of the casino whether there was a way to beat the roulette and win permanently. Due to his sometimes incorrect calculations, which served as the basis of his classic theory of playing roulette, there are doubts about his professional practice as a mathematician.

He published his findings in 1926 in his book "Le gain scientifique d'une seule unité" (German: The scientific gain of a single unit ). After working out the so-called law of escarts , the basis of his probability calculations , he comes to the conclusion that a permanent high profit for the player is unlikely, but an equalizing game is possible. The Marigny method based on this includes 12 different rules, for example only playing simple chances and understanding the stake only as a chip and not as money, in order to avoid impulsive behavior at the gaming table.
