background

In 1929, women's suffrage was made dependent on the level of education, social status and “special merit to society”. It was not until 1938 that the constitution of the kingdom made men and women equal in terms of voting rights. The election law of 1939 still contained an education census . This meant that women and men who could read and write were allowed to vote from the age of 30.

In 1946 the education census was lifted and universal suffrage was established for both sexes. In November of that year, the first women entered the national parliament. In December 1947 Romania became a People's Republic .
