The Danish Navy Museum is a branch of the Stralsund Museum and is located on the small island of Dänholm between the mainland and Rügen . You can reach them via the Rügen dam . The way to the so-called Sternschanze is well marked with sea marks.

In the Middle Ages, Dänholm was of strategic importance. It was here that the future Prussian Navy was born in 1849, after which this island was also used by all subsequent German navies. In the exhibition rooms you can learn interesting facts about the military history of Dänholm in connection with the old fortress and garrison town of Stralsund. The permanent collection is divided into the presentation of the history of the garrison town of Stralsund and individual exhibitions on specific maritime and military topics. A selection of pictures, overviews, schemes, uniforms, weapons, flags, documents, models and items of equipment make the story tangible. In addition to military aspects, the focus is also on civil projects. a. Construction work to cross the Strelasund (ferry connection-Rügen bridge), research results in underwater archeology such as B. 200 finds, recovered from wrecks on Rügen's outer coast.

Changing special exhibitions complement the exhibits. With changing topics such as B. maritime paintings, weapons from different epochs and centuries, memories of special maritime events up to the special exhibition about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff there is a different offer. The special exhibition in 2018 made "The History of the German U-Boats" the theme.

The museum as a branch of the Stralsund Cultural History Museum is financed by the city of Stralsund. Up until the end of 2007, the city subsidized the museum on Dänholm with 72,000 euros annually . Due to austerity measures taken by the city, these funds were canceled in the 2008 budget, so that the operation of the museum was not ensured in December 2007.
