The Nagasaki Naval Training Center ( Japanese 長崎 海軍 伝 習 所 , Nagasaki kaigun denshūjo ) was founded in 1855 by the government of the Shogun in Japan . The decision to found this institution, along with the purchase of modern steam powered warships, was part of Bakufu's modernization activities after the forced opening of Japan by Matthew Perry in 1854.

The center was set up at the Dutch branch on Dejima Island in Nagasaki , where the transfer of Dutch know-how was optimally possible. The director was Nagai Naoyuki . The equipment included the first Japanese steamship , the Kankō Maru , which was handed over to Japan by the government of the Netherlands in 1855 .

Admiral Enomoto Takeaki was a graduate of the training center.
