Marino Ortolani

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marino Ortolani (born July 25, 1904 in Altedo near Bologna , † 1983 ) was an Italian pediatrician and orthopedist .

He developed a clinical examination method for the detection of congenital hip dysplasia , which is still called the Ortolani test after him . Another focus of Ortolani's work was beta thalassemia . In 1955 he started a preventive care program based on screening and genetic counseling. This enabled the Ferrara region to be the first in the world to achieve the goal of 100% prevention of beta thalassemia. As the medical director of the children's clinic in Ferrara , in the 1950s he not only advocated the admission of the mothers of his little patients to the hospital. In addition, it made it possible for the sick children, who often had to spend a long time in the hospital, to be taught by teachers on the ward so that they could compensate for the absence from school.
