Mario Pei

Mario Pei (born February 16, 1901 in Rome , † March 2, 1978 in Glen Ridge (New Jersey) ) was an American Romance scholar , linguist and author of Italian origin.

life and work

Mario Andrew Pei came to the United States in 1908. He received his PhD from Columbia University with the thesis The language of the eight-century texts in northern France. A study of the original documents in the collection of Tardif and other sources (New York 1932) and taught at the same university, from 1952 as full professor of Romance philology. He published numerous works in and outside of Romance Studies, many of which had a considerable impact.
