Marius François Valkhoff

Marius François Valkhoff (born January 7, 1905 in Zwolle ; † September 20, 1980 in Paris ) was a Dutch Romance and Creole scholar who worked in South Africa for a long time .

life and work

Valkhoff studied in Amsterdam , Florence and Cluj-Napoca . At the University of Amsterdam he received his doctorate in 1931 under Jean-Jacques Salverda de Grave with the thesis Études sur les mots français d'origine néerlandaise (Amersfoort 1931). In the same year he became an assistant professor for French at the University of Stellenbosch . He taught from 1933 as an associate professor and from 1938 as a full professor of Romance Philology, from 1947 as a professor of French at the University of Amsterdam. In 1951 he went to the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg . In 1975 he retired and took up residence in the south of France.

In Creolistics he tried to save Dirk Christiaan Hesseling's theses on the origin of Afrikaans with new arguments and the emphasis on the role of Portuguese .

Marius Valkhoff was the son of Pieter Valkhoff and the grandson of Johan Nicolaas Valkhoff .
