Jean-Jacques Salverda de Grave

Jean-Jacques Salverda de Grave (born March 18, 1863 in Noordwijk , † March 22, 1947 in The Hague ) was a Dutch Romanist , Provençalist and Medievalist .

life and work

Salverda de Grave was the descendant of a French Huguenot family. He studied in Groningen with Anton Gerard van Hamel , in Paris with Gaston Paris and in Freiburg with Emil Levy . He received his doctorate in Groningen with Introduction à une édition critique du roman d'Énéas (The Hague 1888). From 1887 to 1896 he taught the future Queen Wilhelmina in the subjects Dutch, French, history and geography. He taught at the University of Leiden from 1897 , from 1907 to 1920 as a full professor of Romance philology at the University of Groningen and from 1920 until his retirement in 1933 at the University of Amsterdam . In 1916 he was a co-founder of the journal Neophilologus .

Salverda de Grave was a member of the Royal Belgian Academy from 1923 and of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in Paris from 1946 . He was an honorary doctor from the Universities of Paris and Brussels.
