Markús Örn Antonsson

Markús Örn Antonsson (born May 25, 1943 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician ( Independence Party ) and was his home country's ambassador to Canada from 2005 to 2008 .

Markús Örn attended Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík and graduated there in 1965. From 1961 to 1965 he worked as a part-time journalist and photographer for the daily newspaper Morgunblaðið . He then worked from 1965 to 1970 at Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) as a reporter and moderator .

Markús Örn's political career began when he was elected to Reykjavík City Council. He was a member of this from 1970 to 1985 and was President of the City Council from 1983 to 1985. From 1991 to 1994 Markús Örn held the office of Mayor of Reykjavík and was chairman of the Independence Party faction in the city council. In 2005 he became the Icelandic ambassador to Canada and represented his home country there until 2008. His successor in this office was Sigríður Anna Þórðardóttir .

Markús Örn Antonsson is married with two children and two grandchildren. He has been a Rotary member since 1983 .
