Mark Hughes

Mark Reynolds Hughes (born January 1, 1956 in Lynwood , California , † May 21, 2000 in Malibu , California) was an American businessman and entrepreneur. He was the founder and CEO of Herbalife International Ltd, a company that diet products , dietary supplements and cosmetics by network marketing sells .

biography

In 1976 Hughes began selling diet products called Slender Now . The products were manufactured by Seyforth Laboratories . The company sold its goods directly , which means that an independent agent buys products cheaply and then sells them to end users ( consumers ). Each proprietary dealer received a fee when he / she recruited a new agent. Mark Hughes used this method years later to build Herbalife. After three years, however, Slender Now went bankrupt. Hughes then sold fitness equipment and diet products to another company before teaming up with a colleague at Slender Now , Richard Marconi, to form Los Angeles- based Herbalife in February 1980 . Hughes frequently mentioned that the drive behind the creation of the company was the death of his mother JoAnn (she died when he was 18); she died from an accidental overdose of prescribed diet pills. Her autopsy shows that she died of an overdose of the pain reliever Darvon. Hughes started selling Herbalife products from his car - five years later he was a millionaire. He marketed his products on television through testimonials from people who gave positive reports about taking Herbalife products (see testimonial ).

Hughes died in his Malibu, California, apartment at the age of 44 of an overdose of alcohol and the antidepressant doxepin . At this point he was married to his fourth wife, Darcy LaPier. He had a son named Alexander, who comes from his previous marriage to Suzan Schroder.
