The name appears for the first time in 1912 on a map of the Scottish explorer James Innes Wilson (1882-1940), who reached South Georgia in December 1909 and worked from 1909 to 1914 as a justice of the peace and postmaster at the whaling station Leith Harbor . It is named after Clements Markham (1830–1916), gray eminence of British polar research.
