The market is located in the old town of Osnabrück in the city center district . Colloquially it is also referred to as the marketplace. It is commonly referred to as the city's parlor. Lined by historical buildings, it has largely retained its character despite severe destruction in the Second World War .

location

The market is located in the central Osnabrück old town between the Heegertorviertel in the west and the cathedral complex in the east.

Development

With a few exceptions, the market still has its original development. The historical buildings such as the Osnabrück town hall and St. Mary's Church from the 15th century are located on the square. The city scales from 1532 are located between these buildings ; today the building serves as the registry office for the city of Osnabrück. In the direction of the cathedral is the market fountain from the 13th century.

On the south side there are the colorful gabled houses as well as the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Center and the newer building of the city library with air storey. The old town hall stood on the site of the city library until 1836 .

A focus of the Osnabrück gastronomy with restaurants and pubs has developed around the market.

history

Alongside the Domburg, the market is one of the founding cells of the city. As early as the 9th century, a market settlement was formed here west of the cathedral, which archaeological excavations had revealed.

From 1961 to 1977 the Osnabrück Town Hall Games took place every year . Open-air theater pieces included Goethe's Götz von Berlichingen and Kleist's Prinz von Homburg . The building ensemble of the town hall, the city scales and the Marienkirche were used as a stage and backdrop .

Four blue circles by Felice Varini

In 2017 the art installation "Four Blue Circles" by Felice Varini was placed at St. Mary's Church and the neighboring buildings . From one point of view on the cathedral, different lines connected to form four circles. This work of art should draw attention to an exhibition in the art gallery .

traffic

With a few exceptions, the space is only open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Events

Despite the name, there is no regular weekly market held on the market , this takes place on Saturday on the neighboring square of the “Große Dom Freiheit”. In the past, the Freedom of the City Parade of the Osnabrück Garrison took place here every year until 2008 . The promotion celebrations of the football club VfL Osnabrück have already been held on the market several times . These took place in the advancement years 2000, 2003, 2007, 2010 and most recently on May 19, 2019.

On the other hand, numerous other events are held in the market over the course of a year:
