The market fountain in Mayen

The market fountain is a cultural monument in Mayen .

Draft / planning

The fountain was designed by the master builder Johann Michael Alken and is one of the few surviving examples of classical architecture in Mayen .

The design of the fountain was completed in 1812; construction began that same year. In 1813 the fountain was finished and opened to the public.

Originally the fountain system consisted of a stepped substructure with a platform and an upright fountain structure. A set of stairs led from three sides to an attached basin. A cattle trough formed the fourth area around the fountain. On days when the market was open , the cattle were kept away from the service water basin by the staircase, only the lowest area remained accessible to the animals. The market fountain is divided into three water levels, of which the top level was intended for people, the middle level for large livestock and the lowest level for small livestock. Citizens could also fetch water there.

After the Second World War

The fountain is one of the few monuments in Mayen that escaped destruction in World War II . Nevertheless, the well was badly damaged during the war. After making makeshift repairs, it was put back into operation in 1951.

New building in the 1980s

The well was rebuilt in 1983; the last work was completed in 1984. Contrary to the original view, the front of the fountain now faces the castle and the town hall.
