The fountain on the Volkach market square

The market fountain in the middle of the market square is one of the landmarks of the Lower Franconian town of Volkach .

history

The history of the fountain is closely linked to that of the market square. A fountain was built there in 1488, underlining the central function of the square. Several shops were grouped around him. The town hall was built in 1544. Master Philipp Höhenstein from Schweinfurt was the builder of this first fountain.

The fountain got its present appearance in 1720. In 1892 a renovation took place. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation lists the Volkacher Marktbrunnen as a monument with the number D-6-75-174-81. The fountain is the focus of the Volkach Old Town ensemble, the underground remains of the previous building are listed as a ground monument.

architecture

The current fountain is octagonal. The basin has a cranked rim. In the middle of the four-tube fountain column there is an Immaculate statue .
