The market hall Nussdorfer Straße in the 9th district of Vienna , Alsergrund , is the last existing market hall in Vienna and is a listed building.

history

The first market halls in Vienna were built in 1864 for the market at Rossauer Kaserne (9th district) and on Landstraßer Hauptstraße . In order to bring about falling prices through more markets and thus more competition and as a reaction to a lull in the construction industry, the municipal council set up a commission for market hall places, market halls and their design. However, only the Zedlitzhalle (1st district) opened in 1871 was built due to lack of funds .

In 1879 it was decided to build four more market halls - this time in brick construction. The locations were Phorusplatz (which no longer exists today) in the 4th district, an area between Neustiftgasse and Burggasse in the 7th district, one in the Bartensteingasse / Stadiongasse / Doblhoffgasse in the 1st district and one at the intersection of Nussdorfer Straße / Alserbachstraße in 9th district.

Since around 1958 there have been discussions about tearing down the market hall and rebuilding it at another location, but this failed due to the question of the new location. In November 1971, the relevant debates were ended for the time being and the renovation of the market was announced. The existing building was initially considered to be secure for around ten years, then the market hall should have given way to the construction of a station for the U6, according to the planning status at that time for the expansion of the Vienna underground network .

After the renovation work, which began in 1972, was completed, the market opening hours on Fridays were extended from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The continued existence of the market hall was still only viewed as temporary due to the planned underground construction.

Market hall as it was in 1979, still without a supermarket

From 1994 to 1995 the market hall in Nussdorfer Straße was rebuilt and renovated for eleven months, with the visual appearance of the historical building condition at the time of construction.

Since March 1, 2002, the Nussdorfer Strasse market hall has been used as a branch by a supermarket chain .

description

The market hall in Nussdorfer Strasse was built as a free-standing structure on an approximately triangular plot of land as a five-sided building based on plans by Friedrich Paul . The strictly historical building has an entrance each on Nussdorfer Strasse and Alserbachstrasse.

The entrance facing Nussdorfer Straße has a portal projection in the form of a Tuscan aedicula flanked by grooved surfaces . In a simplified and reduced form, this design was also adopted for the entrance facing Alserbachstrasse.

The pentagonal sales hall has a raised middle section with a tent roof.
