The market hall in Sonthofen is a building with an eventful history.

history

Originally built in Mindelheim , it was dismantled and rebuilt in Sonthofen in 1929 on the market square, where huge cattle markets were held at that time. At that time it served as a cattle market hall, but was only used for this purpose for a few years in Sonthofen because the cattle trading activity and the rail connection shifted. In 1935 it was converted into an ice rink and was used for two winters for ice skating and ice bowling, but this use, which is very popular with visitors, had to be quickly stopped because it caused structural damage. In the next few years it was used for all kinds of events. After the end of the Second World War , it was used for a short time by the occupying powers and then served as a place for feeding students . It was later used again for concert and theater performances. One of the highlights in the history of the hall was probably the award of town charter to Sonthofen, which was celebrated there. In the 1980s it was decided to demolish the market hall and build a new town hall, but due to lack of financial means, this measure was not carried out. The Heimatdienst Sonthofen and other interested parties are now pursuing the goal of renovating the market hall and transforming it into a “citizens' hall”.
