The Tirschenreuth market square (officially: Maximilianplatz ) is located in the center of the district town and is Tirschenreuth's oldest public square . Nowadays there is no longer a market on the 10,350 square meter area, into which six streets flow and to which two other squares are connected. Exceptions are the kirwa and the Christmas market and the small weekly market. The market square forms the center of the city. It was redesigned between 2007 and 2009 following a referendum .

The official name of the market square is Maximilianplatz, named after King Maximilian II of Bavaria, who died in 1864 . The use of this name is rather uncommon among the population.

location

The Tirschenreuth market square is located in the center of the old town and is north-south oriented. Koloman-Maurer Strasse and the church square with the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin flow into its north side , and Hörmanngasse and Lehnerstrasse adjoin it on its eastern side. In the south the square borders on Unnaplatz and Kochstraße and in the west on Badstraße and Bahnhofstraße. The marketplace is in the shape of a rectangle . The width of the square is 45 meters and the length 230 meters. It is open to traffic.

layout

The Tirschenreuth town hall is located on the west side. It was moved from the center of the market square to the western row of houses in 1582. The development on the east side of the square is divided into two sections with two or three-story buildings by Lehnerstrasse. The main city branch of Sparkasse Oberpfalz Nord and the fashion house Jäger & Turba are also on this page . In the north on the church square are the parish church and the rectory.

In the middle of the long, rising square from the south is a promenade . Since the redesign, there is a large fountain in the lower center. The Johann Andreas Schmeller monument stands on the upper market square . A restored fish fountain was set up in front of the town hall and the Trinity column, which was previously located next to the parish church, was moved to the upper end.

Besides the TEO shopping center, the square is the city’s largest retail location . In addition to numerous restaurants and cafes, there is a large clothing store and several branches of large credit institutions .

Between 2007 and 2009 the square was redesigned after the canal system had to be renewed. The large chestnut trees that dominated the square also had to be removed due to disease. Due to the great reluctance of the population to redesign the square, a referendum was held, but it was voted for a redesign of the square.

Events

North side of Maximiliansplatz

In the upper middle of the square there is a small weekly market for the sale of agricultural products every Thursday morning . The Easter market and the Christmas market also only take place in the middle of the Oberer Platz, but the entire square is closed to traffic for the Peter and Paulmarkt and the Kirchweihmarkt (Kirwa).
