Marktschwärmer is a concept for marketing regional food that was developed in France in 2011 and organizes modern farmers' markets .

term

The company La Ruche qui dit Oui was founded in France in 2011 . The translation of the French term La Ruche into German means something like swarm or beehive . Internationally, the concept has been called Food Assembly since 2014 , and in Germany it was renamed “Marktschwärmer” in 2017.

distribution

The company organizes a network through which only regional foods are offered. It has set itself the goal of bringing producers and consumers closer together again. The business model is based on a combination of online shop and farmers' market. Products are ordered and paid for in advance via the platform. The purchase is received, for example, once a week at the respective collection point.

The distance between the producer and the distribution point is determined by the participants. and averages 27.3 km. The sale takes place on a weekly basis. Once a week, members order groceries from the region via the website. After the sale has closed, the local distribution takes place two days later. Producers or hosts are then personally on site for 2 hours, so that in addition to the sale, personal contact between members and producers can arise.

In 2014 the concept was transferred to Great Britain, where the company operates as the “Food Assembly”. Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany followed. In Germany, Equanum GmbH is responsible for the website. The first market swarm in Switzerland opened in December 2016 in the Basel market hall . In 2016 there were over 1200 local distribution points in Europe, 800 of them in France alone. Some initiatives have several hundred members. According to the company's own information, over 1,000 producers were already registered in Germany in 2019.
