Markus Jooste

Markus Johannes Jooste (born January 22, 1961 ) is a South African manager. From 2000 to 2017 he was CEO of the furniture company Steinhoff International Holdings .

Life

Jooste was born the son of a postal worker. He studied accounting at the University of Stellenbosch .

In 1988 he joined the Steinhoff company. In 2000 he was promoted to CEO there. In this role, he built the company from a small furniture manufacturer into a large corporation in the furniture industry through numerous acquisitions.

When the main stock exchange listing of Steinhoff International Holdings changed from Johannesburg to Frankfurt on December 7, 2015, Jooste described this as an “important day in Steinhoff's history”, but officially decided not to take the flight from South Africa to Germany due to neck pain. Previously, a raid by tax investigators from the Oldenburg public prosecutor's office at Steinhoff's European subsidiary in Westerstede had become known.

In August 2017, the Oldenburg public prosecutor's office started investigations against Jooste on suspicion of falsification of accounts in the three-digit million range. On December 5, 2017, Steinhoff publicly admitted discrepancies in his balance sheet, whereupon Jooste submitted his immediate resignation as CEO. He has since been considered submerged.

Private

Jooste lived in Stellenbosch , is married and has three children. He was one with a fortune of 260 million US dollars to the richest South Africans.
