Markus Rüegg (2011)

Markus Rüegg (born May 20, 1959 in Zurich ) is a Swiss neurobiologist and professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .

Life

Markus Rüegg studied biochemistry at the University of Zurich and then did his doctorate in neurobiology . In 1989 he went to the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine as a postdoctoral fellow .

In 1992 Markus Rüegg was appointed Assistant Professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel . Since 2004 he has been a full professor of neurobiology there.

Act

Rüegg researches the molecular processes that are important for the formation and function of the neuromuscular system. The investigations include the characterization of the extracellular and intracellular signaling pathways . Markus Rüegg succeeded in developing new therapeutic approaches for severe, genetic muscular dystrophy . Recently, his research group was able to show that the multi-protein complex mTORC1 is an important regulator of muscle growth and autophagy, a cellular self-cleaning process. These findings can help counteract the pathological breakdown of the muscles and identify new therapeutic approaches.
