Markus Rothacher (* 1957 in Thun ) is a Swiss geodesist and has been a university professor for advanced geodesy at ETH Zurich since 2009 .

His main research interests are in satellite geodesy (modeling of precise GNSS locations, orbit determination, atmospheric sounding), orbit determination and earth rotation . He is co-author of 5 specialist books and author of around 150 publications in specialist journals. In the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) he is responsible for the “Global Geodetic Observing System” ( GGOS ) and a member of several commissions and special study groups as well as the DGK in Germany .

Rothacher studied astronomy in Bern (1985 licentiate with Gerhard Beutler ), then switched to the Zimmerwald satellite station of the university and in 1990 to a US research stay at MIT . He received his doctorate in 1991 on satellite orbits and from 1991–99 headed the Zimmerwald GPS group and the further development of the Bernese GPS software . In 1998 he completed his habilitation at the Univ. Bern and in 1999 followed a call to the Technical University of Munich as associate professor for satellite geodesy (successor to Manfred Schneider ) and as head of the fundamental station in Wettzell .

In 2004/05 he became professor for satellite geodesy and earth system research at the TU Berlin (Faculty for Applied Geosciences) and at the same time director of the department "Geodesy and Remote Sensing" at the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam . In 2009 he followed a call to the Institute for Geodesy and Photogrammetry at ETH Zurich as Professor for Mathematical and Physical Geodesy .

Rothacher is a member of various international bodies of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the IERS (currently also analysis coordinator) and in the IGS railway service of the GPS system. He is also chair of the IAG's IGGOS project.

For 2018 Rothacher was awarded the Vening Meinesz Medal .
