Markus Späth

Markus Späth (* 1969 ) is a German art historian .

Life

From 1991 to 1998 he studied art history and medium and modern history in Hamburg , Vienna and London . During his doctorate , he received a scholarship from the German Historical Institute in Paris and Rome from 1999 to 2002 . From 2000 to 2002 he was a research assistant at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . In 2002/2003 he was a research assistant on the DFG project Perception and Interpretation Patterns in the European Middle Ages at the University of Hamburg . From 2003 to 2006 he completed a supplementary course for teaching qualifications in science and further education at the University of Hamburg; Acquisition of the Certificate of Higher Education in May 2006. From 2003 to 2008 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Art History. From 2008 to 2015 he was a Dilthey Fellow of the Volkswagen Foundation . In 2013 he was a visiting scholar at the Institute for German Cultural Studies at Cornell University . In 2014 he was a visiting researcher at the SFB 933 "Material Text Cultures" at Heidelberg University . In 2016 he was a substitute professor for Medieval Art History at the Institute for Art History at JLU Giessen . After completing his habilitation in 2017 at JLU Gießen, he was visiting professor at Stockholm University in 2017 . In the 2017/2018 winter semester, he represented the Chair of Medieval Art History at the Institute of Art History at the University of Cologne . In 2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at Merton College . From 2018 to 2019 he represented the Chair of Medieval Art History at the Institute for Art History at JLU Giessen . From 2019 he will hold the professorship for art history with a focus on the history of art of the Middle Ages at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

His research focuses on the media history of the reproducible image in the Middle Ages, image and building cultures of medieval corporations: monastery, city, university, art in context: medieval room ensembles, image and historiography in the Middle Ages, image / writing relationships in the Middle Ages, seeing and perceiving in the Middle Ages and art history and university didactics.
