The Helmut Schmidt University / University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg ( HSU / UniBw Hamburg ), until 1985 University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg ( HSBw Hamburg ), until December 2003 University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg ( UniBw Hamburg ), is one of two universities of the German Armed Forces . It was founded in Hamburg in 1972 on the initiative of the then Federal Minister of Defense , Helmut Schmidt ( SPD ) . The Bundeswehr uses the university for academic training of soldiers in the career of the officers of the army service . The university, like the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich , belongs to the civil organization area of personnel and to the division of the Federal Ministry of Defense . In the ministry, responsibility lies with Unit P I 5.
Admission requirements
In general, the university is only available to officers and candidate officers of the Bundeswehr. However, since the start of teaching there have been cooperation agreements with friendly states, on the basis of which some selected officers from these states study at the university.
A small number of civilian students have been enrolled at the university since 2002. The prerequisite for studying as a civilian at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg is a business scholarship. The scholarships are usually awarded by business-related foundations - so these students are financed at least indirectly by their future employer, mostly large companies. The training costs are currently 6,000 euros ( humanities ), 8,000 euros ( economics ) or 10,000 euros ( engineering ) per academic year.
degrees
Academic degrees and titles acquired at HSU / UniBw H correspond to those of other state universities and are recognized like these, as the course takes place in accordance with the requirements of the Hamburg University Act. The university has the right to habilitation and doctorate .
Faculties and courses of study
At the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg there is, in addition to the usual division between the areas of teaching and administration, at all universities, there is another form of structure. This is due to the students' dual function as a training center and military service.

Academic area
The academic area takes on the tasks of teaching and research; four faculties have been set up for this purpose. The number of faculty institutes is such that academic teaching in small groups enables intensive studies and at the same time scientific research can be carried out.
- Faculty of Electrical Engineering 12 professorships
- Electrical engineering
- Shares in industrial engineering
- Faculty of Mechanical Engineering 7 institutes, 18 professorships
- mechanical engineering
- Computational engineering
- Shares in industrial engineering
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences 9 institutes, 28 professorships
- Educational and educational sciences
- History
- psychology
- Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences 19 institutes, 38 professorships
- Business administration
- Economics
- Political science
- Shares in industrial engineering
-
Notes :
- 1.) Due to its mixed form, the industrial engineering course cannot be assigned to any faculty, but lead management has established itself in the faculty of electrical engineering. The examination board is composed equally of members from the three departments involved
- 2.) The “ISA module” (ISA = interdisciplinary study components) mentioned below is not part of any faculty. Its courses are fed from all faculties. All ISA courses are coordinated by a research assistant in cooperation with the university lecturers from the four faculties.
Student area
The student area (StudBer) is the military association for the student soldiers of the HSU / UniBw H. In this association, the student officers and officer candidates of the university and the staff of the student area are organizationally combined. The head of the student area is an officer with the rank of colonel or sea captain , since September 21, 2018 Colonel Bjarne Krause.
The StudBer's task is to support the student soldiers who are grouped together in terms of service and organization in the StudBer. In detail, the StudBer takes care of all matters in the areas of military training and further education, welfare, support and personnel processing. He carries out general military training (lessons, practical military training, partial force information) and supports the implementation of additional military training (voluntary participation in troop exercises, shooting and combat training).
In addition to the staff, the student area comprises three “student departments” (SFB). These are led by an officer with the rank of lieutenant colonel or frigate captain .
- Student department A
- Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering
- Student department B
- Educational science, history, psychology
- Student department C
- Political science, business administration and economics
Mostly sorted by degree program and year, a student department has several student department groups (SFBG), which are led by a captain or lieutenant captain . The SFB A comprises 4 groups, SFB B 7 groups and SFB C 8 groups.
The StudBer's military superiors exercise disciplinary authority over the student soldiers. They are responsible for the command, military training and education of their subordinate soldiers. The students of Department group leader has the disciplinary powers of a company bosses (stage I), the student department head of the battalion skommandeurs (Level II) and the head region, the students of a regiment skommandeurs (stage III).
In the course of the training change in the army and the associated higher number of students in 2007 and 2008, two additional group leaders were deployed for each student department for the period from 2007 to 2011, whereby the number increased from 4 to 6 and from 6 to 8 for SFB C, increased. The density of supervision is currently around 100 to 120 studying officers / candidate officers per student department group leader.
Until December 14, 2013, the StudBer was called the student area , the SFB student departments and the SFGB student department groups .

Course of studies
The academic year at HSU / UniBw H begins on October 1st of each year. As a rule, the officers and officer cadets are transferred to the university in the week before October 1st. An orientation week takes place here, during which the soldiers set up in their accommodation and receive initial information about studying at the HSU / UniBw H from their older fellow students.
In contrast to the semester structure actually practiced in Germany , a year of study at the HSU / UniBw H is divided into trimesters , which means that not winter / summer semesters, but autumn / winter / spring trimesters , i.e. in three three-month study blocks each per year, is calculated. The summer quarter (July 1st to September 30th) is free of lectures. Here internships are to be completed, annual leave to be taken or, if necessary, exams that have not been passed can be made up.
Examinations are generally written at the end of each lecture trimester and deal with the material covered in the previous quarter. In a few cases it happens that at the end of the trimester the teaching content of several trimesters is checked. For the purpose of the examination, lectures can be held for one to two weeks from mid-December, the end of March and the end of June. Any re-examinations for the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences will take place in September, i.e. during the lecture-free period.
The standard period of study up to the master’s degree is four years. A bachelor's degree can be obtained in 2¾ years. The maximum duration of study is four years, which means that the final thesis for the master’s degree must be submitted no later than September 30th of the fourth year of study. An extension of the study period beyond four years is only possible with the consent of the respective personnel management in the Federal Office for Personnel Management of the Federal Armed Forces (BAPersBw) and only if the soldier is certified by the university that the study success can be expected in the foreseeable future .
The graduation certificates are regularly handed out in a festive setting in mid-October. As part of the graduation ceremony, the Böttcher Prize , donated by the Hamburg businessman Johann Max Böttcher , is awarded to the best of the year in each course .
Some trained officers return to their alma mater as research assistants or doctoral students .
Central facilities
The university maintains several central facilities. These include the computer center, the language center, the media center and the center for technology-based education (ZTB).
Center for Scientific Further Education (ZWW)
Since 2013, the Center for Scientific Further Education (ZWW) at the HSU / UniBw H has been responsible for the organization and offering of further education courses and certificate programs.
University library of the Helmut Schmidt University
Another central facility is the University Library of the Helmut Schmidt University . According to the library ranking library index (BIX), it has been one of the best libraries in Germany for years. The main task of the library is to support academic teaching and research at the HSU / UniBw H, but it is also freely accessible to the general public.

founding
On June 11, 1970, Federal Defense Minister Helmut Schmidt issued a decree for the formation of a commission to reorganize training and education in the Bundeswehr, chaired by Thomas Ellwein . The appointed commission presented the report to the Federal Defense Minister Schmidt on May 17, 1971. It stipulated that officer candidates with an obligation period of at least twelve years should in future complete a three-year course at a university of the Bundeswehr. On June 29, 1972, the Federal Cabinet approved the establishment of universities for the Bundeswehr. The federal government closed accordingly on 3 October 1972 agreement with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Federal Government on the establishment of a university for the training of Bundeswehr soldiers. On October 16, 1972 and January 2, 1973 the decrees of the founding committees for the universities of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and Munich followed . On February 14 and April 4, 1973, the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag approved the establishment of two universities.
University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg
On July 5, 1973, the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg was officially established. The start of teaching at the two universities of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg and Munich took place on October 1, 1973. 300 soldiers began their studies in Hamburg. On September 30, 1976, the first graduates left the universities. In 1978 the university was granted doctorate and habilitation rights .
University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg
In 1985 the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg was renamed University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (UniBw Hamburg). In 2001 the first female students came to the university and in 2002 the first civilian scholarship holders .

Campus and student life
Accommodation
The HSU / UniBw H campus in the Wandsbek district of Hamburg is currently divided into three areas.
The course of study takes place in the property " Douaumont-Kaserne (Helmut Schmidt University)" on Holstenhofweg in Hamburg-Jenfeld . The university management and administration, all institutes and faculties, the lecture hall and laboratory area as well as the central facilities are located here; furthermore sports facilities, the cafeteria and the staff of the student area. Engineering students are also accommodated here in ten, mostly modern accommodation buildings. The ensemble of buildings planned and built by Heinle, Wischer und Partner from 1973 to 1978 with the university building (main building), cafeteria, green area, workshop and central supply system has been a listed building since 2017 .
About one kilometer to the southwest, there are accommodations for the students of the faculties of humanities and social sciences as well as economics and social sciences and also the medical services. These are located in the “Hanseatic Area” property (until 1964 Litzmann barracks) in the Hamburg-Mitte district, Hamburg-Horn district .
A third - short-term set up - living area has been located on the nearby Jenfelder Allee in the former Lettow-Vorbeck barracks since 2007 and, according to the original plan, should be used by the 2008 student group until the end of 2010. After several extensions, however , it will be used in full until the end of 2017 [obsolete] . Furthermore, from 2007 to the end of 2010, apartments on the free housing market were rented in order to cushion the existing “student overload”. The exceptionally strong student cohorts in 2007 and 2008 were due to a change in the training of army officers who make up the bulk of the students. If possible, each student has a single room between 14 and 20 m² in size, mostly with an integrated bathroom / toilet. In the phase of student overload, short-term double occupancy in correspondingly large rooms was also unavoidable. The number of accommodation places is currently 1911. Cooking is done in the mostly modern communal kitchens, and social life between studies and leisure activities also takes place here. Another point of contact for students and university staff is located opposite the campus casino , the Officers' Society HSU eV
financing
During their studies, the student soldiers are paid according to their rank and seniority plus local and family allowances, if applicable. A flat rate accommodation fee is to be paid for the living room in the living areas; this does not apply if the student moves into a private apartment outside the university campus and is recognized as being a “ home sleeper ”.
Leisure activity
Due to the tight curriculum, it is often not easy for students to pursue leisure activities. Many interest groups and working groups enable leisure activities in a club atmosphere.
Every year the new year of the new students is welcomed as a big celebration, the new trimester party (TAF). It is organized by the members of the student convention - the student representation at HSU / UniBw H. The TAF offers students in the first trimester the opportunity to get to know each other.
Further events are held in the respective faculties. This includes:
- WI-Party - last weekend in October, organized by the oldest industrial engineering class, and with a maximum of 900 guests the largest closed celebration at the HSU / UniBw H
- Päd-Party - mid to late June, an open-air that takes place in the Hanseatic area and is carried out by the students of educational sciences
- Jenfeld Christmas market - a cozy Christmas market takes place at the end of the year under the guidance of the FM of House 1/7
Others
As a rule, studying at the Helmut Schmidt University since the year of employment in 2008 requires at least thirteen years of commitment in the career of officers of the Bundeswehr in order to meet the special time requirements of the Bachelor / Master degree programs. In order to be accepted into this career, a three-day selection process at the assessment center for executives of the Bundeswehr (ACFüKrBw) in Cologne must be successfully completed. Depending on which part of military force and forces genus application target is respectively provided military training is completed, before a transfer to the universities of the German Federal Armed Forces takes place. The academic section has been an integral part of officer training since 1973.
A general university entrance qualification , which is recognized within the scope of the Hamburg University Act (HmbHG) of July 18, 2001, is required as a school requirement .
future
As part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , the universities of the Bundeswehr are to be further developed. A department for scientific principles, advice and further development is to be located at the HSU , which will be part of the competence center for education, qualification and certification . The introduction of new courses is being prepared or is planned. These include Psychology , Law and Administrative Sciences ( Public Administration Management ). There are also plans to open the course to other groups of people. The military leadership and international security course is offered as a postgraduate course . Since 2016, graduates of this course have been awarded the title Master of Arts.
