Torsten J. Gerpott (born August 11, 1958 in Bremen ) is a German economist and, as a full university professor, heads the chair for corporate and technology planning at the Mercator School of Management Duisburg at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Life

1977, after graduating from high school Ulricianum in Aurich , Gerpott was trained as an Air Force officer from July 1977 to September 1978 . From October 1978 to February 1982 he studied economics and organizational sciences with a degree in business administration at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg , where he later worked as a research assistant from October 1983 to May 1988. In December 1987 he was awarded a doctorate with “summa cum laude” with a thesis on the subject of “career development of industrial researchers”. rer. pole. PhD .

From June 1988 to March 1994 he worked for the US consultancy Booz Allen Hamilton (initially as an associate, from 1991 as a senior associate, from 1993 as a principal / member of the executive board ).

He completed his habilitation in March 1993 in the field of business administration at the Helmut Schmidt University with a thesis on the subject of "Integration design and the success of corporate acquisitions".

In 1993 he received offers from the University of Jena and the University of Duisburg . On April 1, 1994, he accepted a chair for business administration at the University of Duisburg.

In 1996 he was a founding partner in the establishment of Dialog Consult in Duisburg, which specialized in management consulting for companies in the telecommunications industry.

Since 1999 he has been chairman of the board of the Center for Telecommunications and Media Management (ZfTM) eV

From 2004 to 2006 he was Vice Dean for Research and Young Academics and from 2006 to 2008 Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at the Mercator School of Management Duisburg at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Gerpott is married for the second time and has four children. He is a passionate long-distance runner with a marathon best time of 2:32:31 hours (Hamburg 1988).

As an ad hoc reviewer, he supports around 15 English and German language journals as well as research institutions (e.g. DFG German Research Foundation ).

In 1990 he was voted Author of the Year by the editors of the Zeitschrift für Betriebswirtschaft (ZfB) for his essay on the topic of “Economic Trace Elements in Human Resource Management” . In December 2012 he received for his article "Determinants of self-report and system-captured measures of mobile Internet use intensity", which appeared in the journal Information System Frontiers (2011, Vol. 13, pp. 561-578) from the US Association for Information Systems (AIS) the “Best Publication of 2011” award. In the Handelsblatt Ranking Business Administration 2014, Gerpott was ranked 15th in the list of “Top 250 Life Achievement Researchers”. He was also ranked 15th in the ranking of the strongest research economists in German-speaking countries, published by Wirtschaftswoche in January 2019, in the list "The long-term stars of business administration".
