Horst Sanmann
Horst Sanmann (born December 15, 1927 in Altona adElbe ; † August 27, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German economist .
Life
War and training
As the son of the coachman and truck driver Alwin Sanmann and his wife Bertha Klüss, he was a soldier in 1944 and suffered a serious wound that resulted in the loss of a leg. In 1947 he won the High School and studied at the University of Hamburg Economics . He passed the examination to become a qualified economist in 1950. His first application to a bank failed because they did not want to hire a war disabled person because of the fact that they could not be given notice. A Hamburg company that did business in the clothing trade finally hired him.
College career
In 1951 Albert von Mühlenfels , whom he had met as a university professor during his studies , offered him a position as a research assistant at the University of Hamburg at the Department of Transportation Science . This field of study also led to Sanmann dealing in more detail with traffic science problems. His doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. he obtained it in 1955 with the topic The traffic structure of the north-western European seaports Antwerp , Rotterdam , Amsterdam , Bremen and Hamburg and their changes from the turn of the century to the present .
After prematurely Miihlenfels emeritus left, Horst Sanmann went to the proposal of Karl Schiller and took a job as assistant rector's office. Since he did not his future expectations saw fulfilled in the academic administration, he could have a Habilitandenstipendium the German Research Foundation for two years on his habilitation prepare, which he in 1964 at the Institute of Transport Economics with the scripture maritime markets - an economy of maritime foundation gained and Became a private lecturer in economics . He then went briefly to the University of Frankfurt in 1966 to take on a position at a chair.
Berlin years
In the winter semester of 1966/1967, Sanmann accepted a position at the Free University of Berlin , where he was able to work as a full professor of economics and social policy at the Institute for Social Policy Research . The field of social policy then also determined the focus of his future work. In Berlin he had some informative scientific contacts for him, for example with Helmut Arndt and his theory of the market in the context of microeconomics , with Wolfram Fischer , with Carl Föhl and with Andreas Paulsen , who designed a new business theory. At the same time he was a witness and victim of the student unrest .
He decidedly refused to develop a group university . In the student movement, he saw a politically motivated revolt that would lead to a red seizure of power , where he saw the university under the hammer and sickle symbol , as quoted by the magazine Der Spiegel . To counter this, he and other university employees founded the emergency community for a free university at the end of 1969 , which in 1970 became the forerunner of the Federation Freedom of Science . About the more than three years that he stayed in Berlin, he later said that in his whole life he had not felt so overtired and physically overstrained so often and for so long periods of time .
Hamburg
These developments also prompted him to go to Hamburg University in 1970. But also in Hamburg he was confronted with unruly students in his lectures. So he finally went to the University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg in 1974. From 1977 to 1984 he held the office of President of the university. When the university celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1984, he invited Helmut Schmidt as a keynote speaker. This annoyed Minister Manfred Wörner so much that he prevented Sanmann from taking office again as President. In 1989 he retired and in the same year became a member of the Joachim Jungius Society of Sciences . He was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery.
