Marmelade ( Haitian Mamlad ) is a town in the Artibonite department in northern Haiti with about 7700 inhabitants (as of 2009). The community has a total of about 34,700 residents. The place is 32 km south of the port city of Cap-Haïtien . Jam is located at an altitude between 600 and 1200 meters in Haiti's water-rich mountain region Massif du Nord . The abundance of water is due to springs and an average annual rainfall of 2500 mm.
The city's most important harvest and export product is coffee - there are around 3,000 coffee farmers there. Coffee cultivation was introduced over 270 years ago. A lot of vegetables are also grown, mainly beans and cassava . Under René Préval , the cultivation of bamboo was massively promoted in the region as part of a reforestation program and a factory for the production of bamboo furniture was founded.
Jam is the hometown of former Haitian President René Préval . According to official information, however, he is said to have been born in Port-au-Prince .
